TOWNS

Greene County was formed from Orange County in 1838 and named for Nathanael Greene [1742-1786], a Major-General in the Revolutionary War who stood second only to General Washington. The land for the court house, clerk's office, and jail was donated by Captain William Stanard, the founder of the town, which became the county seat and was called Stanardsville. [1]
