Beginnings [1]

Louisiana is located on the Mississippi River approximately 75 miles north of St. Louis. Laid out in 1818, it is the largest and oldest city in Pike County. As the name of the town suggests, Louisiana was settled by southern families, principally from the upland southern states for who the major east-west streets were named: Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. The city and county lie within an eight-county area of the state known as Little Dixie, a regional identity based on its cultural ties to the Upland South.
