In a bid for visibility, the citizens of Matawan Township voted in 1977 to change the name to Aberdeen. Aberdeen commemorated the towns beginnings, traced back to the settlement of "New Aberdeen" by Scottish Quakers and Presbyterians ca. 1685. The motivation was to establish an identity for the township separate from Matawan Borough. They also believed their renaming would draw them attention since their name would be listed atop any list enumerating the more than 550 municipalities that comprise the State of New Jersey.
