Beginnings

Holmdel may have been named for the Holmes Family. In 1830 there were then 11 Holmes families in Middletown which included what was then the Village of Holmdel. Another speculation concludes that it is a contraction of two Saxon words, Holmd and dell which together may be translated as pleasant valley. Holmdel was incorporated as a township in 1857 from part of Raritan Township. Up to the 1960s the township was primarily a farming community. It was once home to the largest grape farm in New Jersey, McCampbell's Grape Farm. [Holmdel Historical Society, History of Holmdel, www.holmdelhistory.org, accessed May, 2013.]
