In 1722, Chester County's Donegal Township became part of the newly-created Lancaster County. Donegal was divided into East and West more than a century later, in 1838. Early settlers of the area were farmers descended from Scoch-Irish immigrants. Part of East Donegal was taken to form Marietta Borough in 1812.
