Cedar Hill lies partly in Dallas and partly in Erie counties. It is considered a suburb of Dallas.
For a brief time, early in its history, Cedar Hill served as the temporary seat of government for Dallas County. It lies along a branch of the Chisolm Trail which was used to drive Texas cattle to railheads in Kansas.
In 1844 Cedar Hill was the second largest settlement of what was then known as "Peters Colony." Early settlers included Crawford Treese who was a significant landholder thanks to his successful participation in the California Gold Rush. Andrew Penn came to visit Treese, married, stayed on and became a rancher. A post office was opened in 1852 and was soon followed by Cedar Hill's first school.
In the early 1900s Cedar Hill's economy centered around cotton, shifting to ranching (dairy and cattle) by the 1940s.
