Riverton was founded in 1851 by a group of Philadelphia families (Biddle, Cleveland, Clothier, Gillingham Miller, Parrish, Wharton) who decided, together, to build summer homes for their families. By 1894 Riverton was incorporated as a borough. One of the oldest clubs in the county (Riverton Yacht Club, organized in 1865) continues in operation on the Delaware River.
